Doodles, whether Goldendoodles, Bernedoodles, or other mixes, are known for their intelligence, playfulness, and sensitive tummies. That’s why feeding them the right diet at every stage of life is essential to keep them healthy, energetic, and thriving. From playful puppies to wise senior dogs, here’s what you need to know about nutrition for your Doodle at every age.
Puppy Stage (0–12 months):
Doodle puppies are growing rapidly, so they need a diet rich in protein and healthy fats to support muscle development and brain function. Choose a high-quality puppy food formulated for medium to large breeds (depending on your Doodle’s expected size). Look for ingredients like real chicken, lamb, or salmon as the first ingredient, plus DHA (an omega-3 fatty acid) to support cognitive development. Avoid filler-heavy foods with too much corn or byproducts, which can lead to digestive issues.
Adult Stage (1–7 years):
Once your Doodle reaches adulthood, their dietary needs shift from growth to maintenance. Now the focus is on balanced nutrition, weight management, and sustaining energy levels. A high-quality kibble or fresh food diet with moderate protein, whole grains (like brown rice or oats), vegetables, and healthy fats is ideal. Many Doodles benefit from added supplements like probiotics (for gut health) and glucosamine (for joint support). If your Doodle is very active, you might need a slightly higher calorie option—just be sure to monitor their weight regularly.
Senior Stage (7+ years):
As Doodles age, their metabolism slows and their activity level may decrease, meaning they need fewer calories but more targeted nutrients. Senior Doodle diets should include joint-supporting ingredients like chondroitin and glucosamine, as well as omega-3s to reduce inflammation. Foods that are easy to chew and digest are a must, especially for older dogs with dental issues or sensitive stomachs. Some senior dogs may also benefit from a switch to wet food or a gently cooked diet to maintain appetite and hydration.
